Inspired by our long-standing “Moments of Blessing” program and modeled on similar commemorative observances in other communities, including King County, we developed our special interfaith program in cooperation with the Thurston County Coroner, who is legally responsible as caretaker of the remains of unclaimed deceased persons. In some cases, the Coroner is simply unable to identify any relatives; in other cases, family members are unable or unwilling to take responsibility.
Our All Souls service is held annually around the end of October or November 1st, the time of the All Souls and All Saints Days observed by many western Christian traditions and Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead), a holiday celebrated throughout Mexico and beyond.
Interfaith Works sponsored our first All Souls Day Service in 2014.
A moving editorial in The Olympian, about the last All Souls service held on November 1, 2015 penned by editorial board member Jill Severn, can be found here.
